Evangelism/Assimilation
The Evangelism and Assimilation Team strives to encourage among the church members an emphasis on welcoming visitors and encouraging them to become involved in the life of the church. Once someone joins the church there is an effort to help them to become actively involved in the programs and fellowship of the church.
The purpose of this ministry is to create a culture of evangelism. Groups and activities supporting this mission include:
The Sowers Club is responsible for reaching out to first time visitors and communicating Christian hospitality to them. They call on first time visitors the day they worship with us.
The Hospitality Team - Greeters at our doors and volunteers in the Welcome Center who make visitors feel at home during their time in the church. The Welcome Center is a location where visitors and church members alike may go to get answers to questions or to pick up information about programs in the church and local community.
One Member ... One Ministry - The Evangelism Team sponsors a focus periodically in The Voice where members in the church and their one ministry are highlighted. This effort is to encourage all to choose at least one area of ministry within the church. If you need ideas for ministry, please call the church office.
Visitors Table in the Narthex of the Sanctuary - Visitors are encouraged to pick up a free gift at this table. The gift and the information included with it are an effort to make visitors feel welcome at FUMC. This is also an opportunity to learn more about First United Methodist Church.
The Closer Walk Class - Offered periodically throughout the year for new/old members and visitors interested in the meaning of Christianity in a Methodist context at First United Methodist Church, Longview.
Friend and Neighbor (FAN) Day - A Sunday in August when each member is asked to invite someone they know to First United Methodist Church - Longview.
Promotion of Church and its Programs - The church has an ongoing effort to spread the word in the local community about FUMC through advertising on television, radio, and in the newspaper. Evangelism and Communication work together on finding ways to reach out to those in the community and encourage people to become more familiar with FUMC and the opportunities it provides for spiritual growth.
Christmas Parade Outreach - Evangelism sponsors outreach activities to demonstrate the love of Christ to those watching the Longview parade.
